What is Collegiate Shag?

The Collegiate Shag evolved from "Shag" a dance with no clear historical record, but assumed to be based on early Foxtrot.

The term Shag-dancing, however is known to have been used as a slang term to describe early Vaudeville performers. The name association is presumed to relate to the lively performance nature of the dance.

Collegiate Shag was danced in the early thirties to music that emphasized a 2-beat

rhythm, and was danced in variations of the Single, Double, and Triple-time Shag.
The most common form recognized as Collegiate Shag is a double time Shag rhythm.

The name "Collegiate" Shag was most likely a marketing ploy as many "Collegiate" dances were being created at the time and marketed towards the young "College age" dancers. These dances were often leaping/hopping versions of their early ballroom counterparts.

The culture of Shag dance then and now, was for exaggerated steps and tricks, often designed to look more comedic than choreographed, delivered with an underlying tone of fun and 'devil may care'. The dress code of the Shag dancer often followed suit, with popular fashions of the day being saddle shoes for boy and girl, striped socks and shortened trousers for him, and both parties often wearing College blazers or College 'Letterman' sweaters.

The dance is still performed today (primarily "Double" Shag) by swing-dance enthusiasts, socially and in competition worldwide.
